Two Gentlemen of Verona Chairs

For this show, we needed identical 6 chairs. The director and designer both liked a chair outside of our price range. Instead, we modified chairs we already had in stock. As prop master, I designed the process and build the first chair as an example. My props team then followed my example for the rest.

Newsies Ostrich Feather Fans

For this show, we needed 8 large ostrich feather fans. These fans are quite expensive and hard to ship safely. Therefore, I decided to make them. I started by gluing three similarly leaning feathers together to create one feather about 15-20 inches. The feathers then had to be carefully glued to the staves/sticks. Each fan had 16 staves. The fan was then put back together with spacers to allow the fan to easily open and close. To make sure that the fan opened evenly and no more than 180 degrees, fishing line was threaded and tied to each stave through the fan.

The Wolves Frappuccino

This Frappuccino was made for an actor to carry on stage as part of creating their character’s persona, although it was eventually cut. I used a cup from Starbucks as a base. I tested a few different methods for creating the fake insides, but simply painting the inside of the cup was the most effective and gave the most realistic look. I used multiple layers and shades of brown and white to create depth. To hold the straw in place, I filled it with plastic wrap and a cardboard circle at the top. To create the whipped cream on top, I combined modeling clay and water to a consistency that could be piped out of a pipping tip.
